"Redirect error": what it means and how to fix it

The redirect chain for this URL is broken, too long, or loops.

What it means

Google tried to follow redirects from this URL and failed. Common reasons are a redirect loop, a chain that is too long, or a redirect to an invalid URL.

Common causes

  • Two rules redirect to each other (a loop).
  • Many redirects in a row after a site migration.
  • A redirect URL that is too long or empty.

How to fix it

  • Redirect old URLs directly to the final URL in one step.
  • Test the URL with a redirect checker, and remove loops.

How to find these pages

In Search Console, open Indexing > Pages and select the "Redirect error" row. Search Console shows up to 1,000 example URLs. CrawlCoach checks up to 10,000 URLs from your sitemap for each site and groups them by cause, so you fix the most valuable pages first.
