"Not found (404)": what it means and how to fix it
The URL returns a 404 Not Found error.
What it means
Google requested the URL and the server said the page does not exist.
Common causes
- The page was deleted or moved without a redirect.
- A typo in a link or sitemap entry.
How to fix it
- If the page moved, add a
301redirect to the new URL. - If the page is gone, remove it from the sitemap and from internal links.
When you can ignore it
The page was removed on purpose and nothing links to it.
How to find these pages
In Search Console, open Indexing > Pages and select the "Not found (404)" row. Search Console shows up to 1,000 example URLs. CrawlCoach checks up to 10,000 URLs from your sitemap for each site and groups them by cause, so you fix the most valuable pages first.
