Bing "URLs that are redirecting": when to fix it

These addresses send Bingbot to another page. That is fine for old addresses. It is a problem when your sitemap or links still point to them.

Where you see it

In Bing Webmaster Tools, open Site Explorer and apply the filter "URLs that are redirecting". In URL Inspection, the Live URL test stops at a redirect and offers "Inspect redirect destination".

What it means

Bingbot asked for the address and your server sent it somewhere else. Bing shows the final page, not the address that redirects.

Bing's help notes that Bingbot does not follow a redirect right away. Every redirect needs a new fetch, and that fetch may come later. So redirects in your sitemap and links slow Bing down.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Your sitemap still lists old addresses after a move or a rename.
  2. Internal links point to http or www versions that redirect to the main version.
  3. Links with or without a trailing slash redirect to the other form.
  4. A temporary 302 redirect is used for a permanent move.
  5. Chains: an old address redirects to another old address before the final page.

How to tell which cause applies

  1. Click an address in Site Explorer and open it in URL Inspection. The Live URL test shows where it goes.
  2. Open your sitemap and search for the redirecting address. Bing's guidelines say to remove redirected addresses from sitemaps.
  3. Crawl your own site with a link checker and list the links that hit a redirect.

How to fix it

  1. List only final addresses in your sitemap.
  2. Update internal links to point straight at the final page.
  3. Use 301 for permanent moves. Bing's guidelines say to use 302 only for very short changes, less than 2 days.
  4. Collapse chains so each old address goes to the final page in one step.
  5. Use redirects, not canonical tags, when a page has moved. Bing's guidelines say so.

When you can ignore it

Ignore it for old addresses that redirect once to the right page and are not in your sitemap or menus. Bing keeps finding them through old links from other sites, and the redirect does its job.

With CrawlCoach

CrawlCoach flags links on your site that go through a redirect or a chain of redirects, names the pages with those links, and gives the final address to link to instead. It also flags redirecting addresses in your sitemap. That cleanup helps Bing and Google alike.

Questions

Why does Live URL stop at the redirect?

Bing's help says Live URL does not follow redirects, because Bingbot doesn't either. Click "Inspect redirect destination" to test the final page.

Should I use a canonical tag or a redirect when a page moves?

A redirect. Bing's guidelines say to use redirects instead of canonical tags for moved content. Canonical tags are for duplicate pages that both stay live.
