"Server error (5xx)": what it means and how to fix it

The server returned an error when Google requested the page.

What it means

Google requested the page and the server failed with a 5xx error. If this repeats, Google crawls the site less.

Common causes

  • Server overload or timeouts.
  • Application errors on specific page types.
  • Bot protection that blocks Googlebot with an error.

How to fix it

  • Check server logs for errors at the time of Google's crawl.
  • Fix the error, then let CrawlCoach re-inspect the page.

How to find these pages

In Search Console, open Indexing > Pages and select the "Server error (5xx)" row. Search Console shows up to 1,000 example URLs. CrawlCoach checks up to 10,000 URLs from your sitemap for each site and groups them by cause, so you fix the most valuable pages first.
