Request indexing "Quota exceeded": what to do

You hit Search Console's daily limit for Request indexing. Google does not publish the number. Try again the next day, and let your sitemap handle the rest.

Quota exceeded

What it means

Search Console limits how many pages you can submit with Request indexing. Google's help says there is a daily limit, and does not say how many.

The limit exists because Request indexing is meant for a few important pages. For many pages, Google points you to your sitemap.

Google's help says live tests have a daily limit for each property too.

Where it shows: In the message that opens after you click Request indexing, once the day's limit is used.

Why you hit the limit

  1. You requested many pages one by one, for example after a site update.
  2. You requested the same pages more than once. Google says repeats don't speed anything up.

How to check which cause applies

  1. Search Console shows no counter. If you see Quota exceeded, the limit is used for now.

How to fix it

  1. Wait until the next day. Then request your most important pages first.
  2. Submit or resubmit your sitemap in Indexing > Sitemaps, with correct lastmod dates. Google's help calls this the best choice for many new or updated pages.
  3. Link to new pages from pages that are already on Google.
  4. Fix why pages were skipped before you request them. A request for an unchanged page won't change Google's decision.

With CrawlCoach

CrawlCoach does not use Request indexing or Google's Indexing API. On paid plans, it resubmits your sitemap when pages change. It also lists the missing pages to work through first, each with a button that opens Search Console. Google makes the final call on what it indexes.

Questions

What is the Request indexing limit in Search Console?

Google says there is a daily limit but does not publish the number. Plan on a few pages a day, and use your sitemap for the rest.

When can I request indexing again?

Google calls it a daily limit, so try again the next day.

Can I get around the limit with Google's Indexing API?

No. Google only allows the Indexing API for pages with job postings or livestream videos. For other pages, use your sitemap and links from your other pages.
