"Referring page: None detected": what it means

The tool can't show a page that links here. That does not prove no page does. It often means the page needs more links.

What it means

Referring page shows a page Google may have used to find this one. It can link here directly, or link to a page that links here.

Google's help says a missing value does not mean no referring page exists. The data may just not be available to the tool right now.

You may also see "URL might be known from other sources that are currently not reported". That means Google found the address some other way, and the tool can't say how.

Where it shows: Page indexing > Discovery > Referring page.

Common causes

  1. No page on your site links to it, or the only links are buttons or scripts that Google can't follow.
  2. The page is new, and Google has not crawled the pages that link to it yet.
  3. Your links point to a different version of the address, such as one with a query string.
  4. Google found the page only through your sitemap. Then the sitemap shows on the Sitemaps line, and Referring page stays empty.

How to check which cause applies

  1. Open Links in Search Console and look under Internal links for the page.
  2. Check that links to it are plain <a href> links. Google's docs say it can only follow links with an href.
  3. Look at Last crawl. If it says N/A, Google has not visited the page yet.

How to fix it

  1. Link to the page from related pages that are already on Google.
  2. Use plain <a href> links in the main content or the menu.
  3. Add the page to your sitemap, so Google has a second way to find it.
  4. Then click Request indexing.

When you can ignore it

The page is on Google, and you know other pages link to it. The tool often leaves this line empty.

With CrawlCoach

For a missing page, CrawlCoach can suggest pages already on Google that should link to it and don't yet. Google makes the final call on what it indexes.

Questions

What does "Referring page: None detected" mean?

URL Inspection can't show a page that links to this one. Google's help says that does not prove no such page exists.

Is "None detected" a problem if the page is indexed?

No. If the page is on Google, Google found it. The line is often empty even for pages with links.

Does a sitemap count as a referring page?

No. Sitemaps have their own line, right above. Referring page is about links from other pages.
