Is Search Console enough, or do you need an SEO audit tool?
Most small sites need only Search Console and a free crawl. Pay when you need a deep crawl, keyword and backlink data, or daily checks on thousands of pages.

Search Console and audit tools answer different questions. Search Console shows what Google decided about your pages. An audit tool such as Screaming Frog, Ahrefs Site Audit, or Semrush Site Audit crawls your site the way a search engine would, and lists what it finds: broken links, redirects, missing titles, slow pages.
So the question is which gap you have. Here is what each tool does, what it costs, and when it is worth paying for. We make CrawlCoach, which works on top of Search Console. It is not a crawler suite, and the sections below say where the others win.
| Tool | Main job | How much it covers | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Google's own report on your site | Your whole site, with up to 1,000 examples per reason | Free |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | A crawler on your computer, for technical audits | 500 URLs free; with a licence, as many as your computer can hold | Free, or $279 a year per user |
| Ahrefs Free | Site Audit and backlinks for sites you verify | 5,000 crawl credits a month per project | Free |
| Ahrefs Lite | SEO suite: keywords, backlinks, rank tracking, audits | 100,000 crawl credits | $129 a month |
| Semrush SEO Toolkit | SEO suite: keywords, competitors, rank tracking, audits | 100,000 pages to crawl a month | $139 a month |
| CrawlCoach | Google's verdict for each page, with fixes in order | Up to 50,000 URLs per site | Free report, then from $29 a month |
When Search Console is enough
A site with a few hundred pages, where the Page indexing report shows few missing pages. Check it once a month. Add Bing Webmaster Tools, which is free and imports your sites from Search Console in one step.
For broken links and missing titles, run a free crawl now and then: the free Screaming Frog covers 500 URLs, and Ahrefs Free audits sites you verify.
When to add a crawler
Before a redesign or a platform move, or when you need every redirect and canonical in one table. Screaming Frog is the usual pick. A licence adds JavaScript rendering and the Search Console integration.
It wins on depth. The tradeoff is that you start each crawl yourself and work out the fixes from the tables.
When an SEO suite pays off
Ahrefs and Semrush earn their price when you need data about other sites: keywords to target and who links to your competitors. Their site audits come with that. If you only need the audit, the free tiers or Screaming Frog cost far less.
When CrawlCoach fits
When Search Console shows pages missing from Google and you have too many to inspect one by one. CrawlCoach reads Google's verdict for each page in your sitemaps, up to 50,000 URLs per site, sorts the missing pages by reason, and emails you a fix list with the most important pages first. Paid plans check every day and email you when a page drops off Google. Starter is $29 a month for 1 site, Pro is $59 for 3, and Agency is $149 for 15 client sites.
It has no keyword research, backlink data, or rank tracking. If you need those, pair it with a suite, or skip it and use the suite alone.
Questions
What is Screaming Frog for, if I have Search Console?
Search Console tells you what Google decided. Screaming Frog shows what is on your pages right now: every link, redirect, title, and canonical, crawled the way a search engine would. Use Search Console to spot a problem, and a crawler to find its cause across the site.
Is Ahrefs Webmaster Tools still free?
Yes. Ahrefs now calls it Ahrefs Free. It is free for sites you verify, with a Site Audit that checks for over 170 issues and 5,000 crawl credits a month per project.
Do I need a paid SEO tool for a small business site?
Usually not. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and a free crawl cover most small sites. Pay when you need keyword or competitor data, or when the site grows past what you can check by hand.
Can an audit tool tell me why Google didn't index a page?
A crawler can find causes it can see, such as a noindex tag, a redirect, or a canonical that points elsewhere. Google's own reason, such as Crawled - currently not indexed, comes only from Search Console or its API.
