Breadcrumbs report "Missing field" errors, and how to fix them
Each Breadcrumbs "Missing field" error is a gap in your BreadcrumbList: an empty list, a crumb with no address, or a crumb with no name. It stops the breadcrumb trail from showing, not the page.

Critical: the item can't show as a rich result until it's fixed.

Since January 2025, Google shows breadcrumbs only on desktop results. On mobile, the result shows just your domain. Google still reads the markup and keeps the Breadcrumbs report.

</script>Missing field "itemListElement"
The list is empty. It can happen on pages with no parent, such as a post in no category: the template still prints BreadcrumbList with nothing in it. Discourse fixed exactly this for topics in Uncategorized. Print the list only when it has crumbs.
Missing field "item" (in "itemListElement")
A crumb has no address. Every crumb needs item, except the last one, which Google fills in with the page's own URL. Look for a middle crumb whose link is empty, such as a category with no page of its own.
Either "name" or "item.name" should be specified (in "itemListElement")
A crumb has no label, or the label is an empty string. Yoast's support has seen this on paginated archive pages that use custom pagination. In microdata, it can also come from property="item.name" where property="name" belongs.

}Who writes your breadcrumbs
WooCommerce
WooCommerce prints a BreadcrumbList from its own breadcrumb on shop pages. Yoast SEO and Rank Math can print one too. If you see two lists in the Rich Results Test, turn one off.
Shopify
Dawn and Horizon print no breadcrumb markup. If your store has some, an app or a theme customization added it, and that's where to fix it.
Confirm the fix
- Test a page from the report in the Rich Results Test. Breadcrumbs should show as valid.
- In Search Console, open Enhancements > Breadcrumbs, click the issue, and click Validate fix.
Questions
Do breadcrumb errors hurt my rankings?
A Breadcrumbs error stops the breadcrumb trail from showing in your result. The page stays indexed and can still show.
Does the last breadcrumb need a URL?
No. Google's docs say the last crumb can leave out item. Google uses the address of the page it's on.
Are breadcrumbs still shown on mobile?
No. Since January 2025, Google shows them only on desktop results. Keep the markup: Google still supports it there.

More structured data fixes
- Invalid object type for field "<parent_node>"Google's help doesn't explain <parent_node>. Reports from site owners point to one pattern: the wrong type is on the object the markup hangs from, not on a named field. Test the live page first, then check the types below.
- Unparsable structured dataGoogle found structured data with a syntax error, so it couldn't read that markup at all. Every item in this report is critical. When many pages share an error, a template is usually the cause.
- Review snippets errorsA Review snippets error means Google won't show stars for that item. Each one has a small fix: a supported type, a rating count, a name for the reviewed item, or the rating scale.
