"Indexed, not submitted in sitemap"

Google indexed the page, but the page is missing from your sitemap.

What it means

Google found and indexed the page through links, not through your sitemap. The page is on Google, but a sitemap entry helps Google notice future changes sooner.

Common causes

  • Your sitemap generator skips this page type.
  • The page is old, and the sitemap was rebuilt without it.
  • The URL is a variant (for example, with a trailing slash or parameters) of a URL that is in the sitemap.

What to do

  • Add the page to your sitemap if it is a page that you want people to find.
  • If it is a variant of another URL, set a canonical tag that points to the main URL.

How to find these pages

In Search Console, open Indexing > Pages and select the "Indexed, not submitted in sitemap" row. Search Console shows up to 1,000 example URLs. CrawlCoach checks up to 10,000 URLs from your sitemap for each site and groups them by cause, so you fix the most valuable pages first.
